Extremadura is the birthplace of our wines, the quality of which stems from the expertise of our winegrowers and wineries.

To look back at Extremadura’s long-standing viticultural tradition is to recall its early inhabitants—the Celtic and Lusitanian peoples—though it was undoubtedly the Roman civilization that truly established and fostered the growth of viticulture in the region.

Wines from Extremadura secured their distinct identity and quality status on April 16, 1999, when an Order from the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (MAPA) ratified the Regulatory Council’s regulations. This journey began when the “Vino de la Tierra” Interprofessional Commission received approval for its regulations via an Order issued by the Department of Agriculture and Commerce on December 12, 1990. The next milestone was the recognition of the Ribera del Guadiana Designation of Origin (DO) and the appointment of a Provisional Regulatory Council in August 1996. Subsequently, as a precursor to the long-awaited final ratification, the Regional Government of Extremadura (Junta de Extremadura) approved the regulations through an Order dated March 17, 1997.

Thus, the establishment of the Ribera del Guadiana DO served as recognition of the excellent work being done and the land of Extremadura’s natural aptitude for winemaking.

The wineries within the Geopark that produce wines certified under the Ribera del Guadiana Designation of Origin are Bodegas Ruiz Torres, Bodegas Cañalva, and Bodegas Carabal.
